Software development remains largely a sequential process. Concurrent engineering principles have been more widely adopted and with greater success in hardware. A methodology for marrying concurrent engineering principles to software engineering, or concurrent software engineering, is proposed. A hierarchy of software project complexity from single stage problems to firmware and multi-platform projects is defined. Principles of concurrent software engineering are developed for each level in the hierarchy. Research findings that established limitations to implementing concurrent engineering are also discussed
