Resource description

A third industrial revolution is underway in manufacturing. As products become more complex, quality control becomes more difficult, and customers grow more demanding and diverse, mass production of standardized products is increasingly unsatisfactory. In responding to this challenge managers of manufacturing firms have been forced to face several critical questions and some strategic choices... These managerial challenges have been compounded by integration of the world economy. This paper presents some major results of a four-year study recently completed at the International Institute for Applied System Analysis (ILASA) in Laxenburg, Austria. The study concluded that Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is potentially a breakthrough of the "complexity-reliability-variety" barrier
