This paper reviews the literature on career transition and change, identifying two significant gaps: the dearth of recent empirical research on career change and the absence of theory on the determinants and process of non-institutionalized work role transitions. The paper addresses three questions: Why do people change careers? How does the transition process unfold? What are the key outcomes and moderators of change? The paper identifies self-conceptions, social networks, and trigger events as central influences in an unfolding process.
