Resource description

The authors argue in this paper that the failure of neo-classical economics to effectively account for the productive role of soil and land resources is restricting the possibility to manage these resources sustainably. New solutions are required, and this paper seeks to propose new directions for research to evaluate alternative land use strategies and integrate the productive role of soil functions into the economic context. The solutions proposed range from the use of voluntary proactive environmental management to the pricing of soil services. The application of an "energy concept of soils" is proposed as a unifying concept for the integrated sustainability assessment of soil services, which could lead to consideration of soil services in standard economic analysis.
