Resource description

The progress of international business theory is reviewed critically, to conclude, with others, that the discipline needs to be re-shaped to include a more direct accounting for the context against which events are analysed. The nature of explanation within social science, and in respect to the world of economic organization, is considered by taking note of the views of Weber, Ragin, Whitley, and Geertz. The advocacy, by the latter, of the use of 'thick description' to achieve understanding of complex social phenomena, is explored by way of examples. These are presented as analyses of the American and French business systems, using a model which extends that proposed by Whitley, by adding the component of rationale, and following a lead by Weber. Implications for business strategy are indicated by an examination of embedded competences which are societally specific.
