Resource description

This paper argues that closure in the communication network of actors seeking the cooperation of a third party creates structural conditions that help the actors induce that party's cooperation. An analysis of cross-functional teams within a European high-technology firm shows that closure in the communication network among the internal consultants coordinating a team resulted in higher levels of cooperation between consultants and other team members, as well as between those team members. The paper goes beyond the role of network structures in enabling cooperation between willing actors to explore the effects of such structures in inducing cooperative behavior from parties who may be otherwise be reluctant or unable to engage in such a behavior.
