While nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) may generate additional risks and challenges for corporations, the author argues that corporations can also use partnerships with NGOs to gain competitive market and nonmarket advantage. In this paper the author attempts to explain the rise of influence of NGOs, the unique competencies and resources that NGOs can bring to partnerships with corporations, and how these partnerships can generate market and nonmarket sources of competitive advantage.
