Resource description

Few studies have offered insight into how managers cope with the adjustment challenges in an international assignment. Drawing on a coping framework, this study examined the diverse strategies that expatriate managers utilize in response to the problems encountered overseas, the relative effectiveness of these coping strategies, and the behavioral tendencies that discriminate between effective and ineffective expatriates. The findings show that the nature and effectiveness of expatriate coping strategies depend on factors such as the host country, position level, and stage of assignment. The results thus call for a contingency approach to the study and practice of expatriation.
