The author proposes four ideal types of planned change processes, each with distinct temporal and non temporal assumptions. Each ideal type is associated with altering a distinct organizational element: Commanding changes in formal structures, Engineering changes in work processes, Teaching changes in systems of beliefs, and Socializing changes in social-work relations. He then argues that large-scale change involves an alteration of multiple organizational elements, thus requiring enactment of multiple intervention ideal types. He defines temporal capability as the change agentsÂ’ ability to comprehend various temporal conceptions and to use this information to guide the sequencing, timing, pacing, and combining of interventions. Temporal capability is necessary to the realization of large-scale change.
